Getting here was fun, and they're calling for anywhere from 12-18 inches for us, because at the moment we're caught in a swirling spiral of a storm. So my drive home should be.... interesting.
Now...
Because of this snow, I'm going to predict that this might possibly be another wet, squishy Lilies.... slightly cooler than normal. Sort of like the one in 2004.
Thinking of the 16' diameter round from Midwest tents.
What say you?
(Yes, that was a joke)
I don't want to be here at work, I want to be home, sitting on my couch, drinking God's Blessing (which would be Irish Creme in my case, for those who don't know), watching Boondock Saints One and Two, and wearing my shamrock pajamas.
Because that is happiness.
I decided I needed to take a minute to explain why I’m experimenting with the fimo and the resin.
You see, I’ve had to do a lot of pondering on my role as a peer, and how that role would be interpreted through the lens of an early period persona. For me personally, I want to “play” as authentically as possible.
So… the first issue for me is this: What is the role of a peer?
To inspire, encourage, teach, lead, serve and advise both the Crown and the populace for the good of the Kingdom.
Okay. Next, looking at the role of an early period nobleman/woman in early period generic tribal/Germanic culture, there are a couple of things that stand out.
First, your oath is all-important. Secondly, hospitality, in the form of feasting and ritual bearing of the cup by the woman of the house, was a measure of your worth as a nobleman. Thirdly, rewarding those who have served you well or impressed you by the giving of gifts not only demonstrated generosity but strengthened the ties you had to those around you. Frequently the gifts were money or jewelry… some outward show from you to someone else of recognition and their value and worth.
These three things were the basis of what would be considered a “good” nobleman/woman.
Now, to apply these qualities to my SCA persona, I need to see how they can be adapted or modified if they need to be.
The “virtue” of honesty doesn’t really need to be adapted. My word is my word, whether it’s a Crown I’ve sworn fealty to or the promise I’ve made to help someone by teaching a class or washing dishes.
Hospitality can be several different things… not just opening my home as crash space or providing a tent for someone driving down from B.F.E. to attend an event, and not even sharing food. But it can also be welcoming them with open arms into my home Shire, inviting people to participate in my conversations I have with “my people”, and generally just making them feel at home.
The final item, the gift giving, is where the Fimo comes in. (I know you were wondering how I was gonna work it, weren’t you?) I would love to be able to give everyone who impresses me, everyone who inspires me, even those who need to be encouraged “real” period jewelry… and I’m sure they would like it if I gave them that or money. But I can’t. Yes, I could give theses people favors of cloth or strips of weaving… but that wouldn’t be accurate for my persona. It would be a gift of little worth by the standards of my culture. The Fimo stuff is inexpensive, so I can give it more often, spreading “joy” and giving recognition and encouragement to more people.
It gives the illusion of expense, and if done correctly, it actually does look like the real thing from about 3 feet away, especially if I leaf it in faux leaf. It doesn’t take a lot of time to do it… The falcon took about 4 hours from molding to completion. I can mass produce them using the “press” method, and do several at a whack.
So anyways… that’s why I’m looking at doing them.
Tonight, there was a large cockroach in my kitchen. Coincidence? No, probably not, considering I've lived here for over 6 years and have never had an issue before.
Cockroaches are my phobia by the way.
Had a nice visit with Mom this weekend. I miss her a lot.
I also made a Visigothic falcon/eagle replica out of fimo and acrylic resin, here:
It's not finished yet... I need to get some other resin dyes. And it is just the prototype.
But it started a conversation between me and the Hans about the way the SCA has evolved, and it got me to thinking about some things.
You all know me well enough by now that you know I tend to try to be pretty authentic in my dress and persona.
I want things to be right.
And that tends to equal expensive... unless you know where to look and have access to a shop.
But what we were talking about is that unfortunately, the Society may have gone so far down the road of "perfectly authentic" that we might be pricing out people who would otherwise really be interested in the game, except for the expense.
We sort of don't have tolerance for people who are "making the attempt" anymore... We want them to be where we are NOW in terms of authenticity, forgetting that when a lot of us started out we didn't have the amount of money to invest that we do now.
I know there's a lot more factors than that involved... it was just late night conversation.
Yes, I am planning on making more early period jewelry from fimo and resin. If I had unlimited funds and time to really research the fine art of metalworking and inlaying slivers of garnet, I would. But I don't. Would I like to buy my jewelry premade and ready to go and not make it? Yeah. But have you looked for premade Merovingian jewelry that's the right scale? (In other words, big and mucking gaudy.) They don't make it. Well, Raymond's Quiet Press does... but that's about it. So the selection is fairly limited. And although most of his stuff is pretty well priced, it's still a lot more than most of us could have afforded just starting out.
Anyway, just pondering. Feel free to weigh in, I'm gonna try to go back to sleep.
I half expected
Since she hasn't, I guess I will.
You guys know I'm not a typical feminist.
But this... I feel nauseated.
( Just because I have boobs doesn't mean I should be grateful for your attention. )
Unfortunately, who didn't see that one coming?
Matching up the earrings side tracked me. I don't know how some of them ended up under the bed. Well, I do know, but you guys probably don't want to hear about that.
Yes... At current count I have over 50 some odd matching pairs of earrings.
I do not have room on the jewelry hanger for all of them.
This does not include the SCA only earrings that are in a box for SCA stuff, or the ones that have matching necklaces, or the handful I have that have no twin... not even under the bed.
Combine the earrings and the 42 different colors of nail polish, 30 some odd sets of matching underwear, and when Armegeddon comes, I'll be going out in STYLE.
Sometimes I'm such a GIRL. And this irritates me to no end.
There has to be a support group for this.

We bought two much needed 6 foot book shelves, to go in with the additional two.
By the end of this afternoon I MIGHT have space to walk in the bedroom without tripping over stacks of books.
wish me luck.
